Reader's Workshop
The goal in room 24 is to create a culture of readers. Both at school and at home, reading should be a pleasure rather than a chore. Reader's workshop is designed to foster a love of reading in children and to create confident, competent readers.
During Reading Workshop, we will begin with a read aloud that includes a mini lesson. During the lesson, students are asked to practice the skill. Then students have the opportunity to use that skill in their own reading.
During workshop, students have many different ways to demonstrate and develop their reading skills! They can listen to reading on the computer, independently read from my extensive book collection, read with a partner if there is a common interest, or practice reading skills with me.
To support your child's reading at home, it's important to make reading time about relaxation and fun. The goal is for reading to become a part of your child's regular routine, not a homework assignment they do because they have to. Helping your child select books of interest, providing count up timers (so they aren't watching the clock!), and reading to or with your child are all great ways to help your child become a life-long reader!
